I got a new DELL Latitude E6440 laptop, and after finding what I thought was the licence key I habitually reinstalled it using a vanilla Windows 7 disc in order to get rid of bloatware.
The installation worked fine, but it turns out the license key I recovered is just some sort of dummy. Instead the key is integrated into the BIOS, and the official way of using it is to use a DELL install disk for installing Windows.
Hi All, I've built an image with Image Assist using a new Dell OS recovery ISO for windows 10 pro. After installing the test image on a Optiplex 7050 everything looks okay but under Windows Activation I'm getting the 'Connect to the Internet to activate Windows' message. OEM SLP: This key comes pre-installed in Windows, when it comes from the Factory. This key is geared to work with the special instructions found only on that Manufacturer's computer hardware. So when Windows was installed using the OEM SLP key (at the factory) Windows 7 looks at the motherboard and sees the special instructions and Self-Activates. Windows 7 OEM Product Key Activation Question Hello, I just wanted to ask a basic question. Sorry if it's a noob question or if this was asked, I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.
Is there any way to activate Windows with the license that I own without reinstalling?
Alternately, how do I acquire a Danish Windows 7 Professional 64 bit install disk that can do the DELL licence thing?
Solution:
It turns out that the key I found is just a key for the pre-image. There is a sticker with a different key (located under the battery, which came pre-installed, why would I pick it out?) (thank you CharlieRB). The story about the BIOS key came from some clueless phone support guy in the shop.

I'm not aware of any BIOS-integrated licenses with Windows 7. You probably have an OEM key, that is something different.
If your device came with Windows 7, it has a license label with the key. The only exception to this general rule is that it is a Windows 8 Pro licensed computer factory-downgraded to Windows 7 Professional. In that case, you will have to contact Dell support to get a valid Windows 7 Professional key or reinstall the factory image.
Daniel BDaniel BAs has been said: the OEM image has been pre-activated and (most likely) the key you have on the sticker is an unusable OEM key - it has to be there.
Through many years experience it is most important to make the recovery disks, buy them, or have an image of the machine when you first turn it on.
Trying to use the sticker code to activate will not work in most cases. Period.
Your OEM will not give you a code - you could be anyone. That's why they give you a recovery feature or you can buy disks from them.
Also: even using a key finding software won't give you a valid key to use before you reformat.
If you try to install Windows using a normal disk then you will (in almost all cases) have to buy a retail key.
The logic for this answer is simple: if you don't make the recovery disks for your machine then either way you will be buying them or buying a fresh Windows license to then use your own disk.
KinnectusKinnectusHow did you record the Windows license key? Was it the 'Product ID' that shows up when you press Win+Break? That's not a valid Windows key. Instead, run NirSoft's ProduKey and record the Windows key (as opposed to the product ID).
You can then install that key with
And confirm activation with
If that's what you had actually done, then a last resort solution is described at Activating Windows 7 the OEM way.

Just reinstall, activation is taken care of via BIOS(No COA) or use purchased key if you upgraded.
Can anyone confirm/deny the validity of these methods or make suggestions on how to better accomplish activation after a reinstall? I am mainly concerned with XP since the information I have found is rather scattered and I am not sure if its possible to activate a 'royalty free OEM' using a generic OEM/retail disk install and Windows Key Update Tool or if I would need to use one of the old methods of backing up the files and altering the install disk.
If there are any known issues with activation on any version using the windows images/techniques I listed can someone please elaborate on them. I am asking because I started a new job that requires re-installing every version of windows on various computers that have OEM and retail versions.
The information I gathered on various forums is rather scattered and contradicting, this is why I am posting this seemingly stupid question that you may think has been answered a million times. I want someone to give me a definitive response so I don't screw someones computer up by remove necessary OEM files.

To install on 'royalty free OEM' machines (HP, DELL, etc.) you can get the vendor's oembios files from the oembios repository, or backed up from the current installation.
You then need to use the SLP (system locked preinstallation) key that corresponds to the installation media's product ID. These used to be archived on the My Digital Life forums, but were taken down due to DMCA request. I'm not sure if the particular vendor key is required, or if those provided by Microsoft will work. If you still have the original installation from the OEM, you can extract the SLP key they used for installation from the registry using a tool like produkey.
(Most antivirus seems to complain about produkey, but I've never had issues with it.)
nLite can help you create the ISO and be very useful for testing in a VM, but it's quite a bit more difficult to test the SLP activation with the VM.
Windows 8/8.1
After a fresh install, the system does not auto activate and when one tries to enter the correct OEM Product Key (extracted from BIOS), it is refused. The trick is to first remove the current Product Key with slmgr /upk
, then the OEM key can be entered and activation works flawlessly. This idea comes from Clean install Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 from OEM key, which also describes how to get the OEM key using RW Everything (including video tutorial!). Really this has saved me several hours, maybe days of experimenting. If you find it helpful, please upvote that answer instead of this one.
I also created a small PowerShell script to accomplish all the steps in a fully automated manner, which is great for mass OS deployments (e.g. using the amazing OPSI):

Dell Oem Windows 7 Activation Key
I found this techdoors link on activating Windows 7 with OEM licenses to be invaluable.
If you have a computer that has an Windows 7 OEM license embedded in the BIOS SLIC area, and then reinstall a generic image, it will claim to be not genuine. To verify, run this command from a cmd prompt with administrator privs:
It will say 'License Status: Notification', and 'Notification Reason: 0xC004F063'.
To fix that, find the proper OEM key file from this repository from the link above, and then run:
where [VENDOR] is the name of your computer vendor.
Now run
again, and it should say 'License Status: Licensed'.
To check your BIOS SLIC area, you can use the Microsoft Genuine Diagnostics Tool and look in the 'OEM Activation 2.0 Data' section.
