How to restart AMDS

You might see the following error when connecting your device: 'This [device] cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device Service is not started.'

Follow these steps to restart AMDS:

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect any iPhone, iPad, or iPod that's currently connected.
  2. Access the Run command by simultaneously pressing the Windows logo key and the R key on your computer's keyboard.
  3. Type services.msc and click Ok. The services console should open.
  4. Right-click on Apple Mobile Device Service and click Properties in the shortcut menu.
  5. Set the Startup type pop-up menu to Automatic.
  6. Click Stop the service.
  7. After the service has stopped, click Start the service.
  8. Click Ok.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Open iTunes and connect the device.

this is strange, as i had no issues running device centre a while back with windows mobile devices on win7.

getting the stupid questions out of the way, is the account that is installing and running the software a local administrator acount (even a domain account that is part of the 'administrators' group in the 'local users and computers' mmc snap in?

have you tried right clicking WMDC and selecting run as administrator?

and as a first step:

Disconnect the devices, all of them
again unstall WMDC
go to device manager
select 'View' and select 'show hidden devices' (make sure there is a tick next to it afterwards.
reboot
re install WMDC
reboot
start up WMDS as an administrator (right click, run as administrator)
plug in devices
pray? (if you are religious)
Party (if successful)

next i would suggest trying to get an older version of WMDC, just incase it is a bug with the newer version, then try steps above with that version
