I just upgraded from Win XP to Win 7. My machine is a home build. Motherboard Gigabyte K8NSNXP-939, Processor AMD Athalon 64 FX 57, 2 GB DDR 400 PC 3200 G Skill Ram memory, 750 watt Power supply, 80 GB ST3808110AS ATA Seagate Harddrive and a formerly ATI AMD HD 4650 1 GB AGP Video Card. System was running fine on Win XP.
My problem is with the video card. Win XP had my card identified as HD 4650 1GB AGP, Win 7 has my device identified as a Standard VGA Display Adapter and has installed some Microsoft generic driver to it version 6.1.7600.16385. When I try to uninstall the driver, Win 7 reinstalls it on restart. When I try to upgrade the driver from a specific location Win 7 tells me it has identified that the best driver for my device is already installed. Consequently, I am not getting the full benefit of my video card. How can I install the AMD driver on this AGP device?

You need to install *all* drivers (motherboard chipset, video card, audio card, network device(s), etc. and so on...) from the manufacturer(s) web sites - no matter if you believe they are working right now or not. The manufacturer(s) of hardware always have and likely always will be the first line of support for their own products, including for software and drivers that allows their hardware to work properly under any given operating system.

Worst case - some of your hardware is not supported by the manufacturer under the operating system you have chosen to run. However, that is something you surely checked into before upgrading (and no - Microsoft update checkers and such will not give you the entire story. It is a manual process.)

So visit AMD (ATI was bought by AMD many years ago) and get the latest driver you can for your device.
