I have had a number of issues trying to get my 10.3-R installation upgraded to 11.x. I first had buildworld issues with 11.0-R, then different buildworld issues with 11.1-RC3, and now I'm having yet another issue with 11.1-R.

• How to keep a FreeBSD system up-to-date with freebsd-update or Subversion. How to compare the state of an installed system against a known pristine copy. How to keep the installed documentation up-to-date with Subversion or documentation ports. The difference between the two development branches: FreeBSD-STABLE and FreeBSD-CURRENT.
• If you want to to install FreeBSD 11.0 using ISO, you can download FreeBSD 11.0 final version from the link given below. After downloading the ISO, create a bootable USB or DVD, and install fresh FreeBSD OS as described in the following link. Upgrade to FreeBSD 11.0. Note: Backup your important files and folders before upgrading to the new version.

So I get that 10.4 is the upgrade to 10.3 and 11.1 is the upgrade to 11.0, but what is the difference between 10.4 and 11.1 and, more broadly, the diffrence between the 10 and 11 series? Why are both available at the same time? Asking because I am interested in switching over from Linux but my computer isn't really powerful enough to run a VM with a desktop and I am not interested in dual booting so I just want to go for it but don't really know which one to pick.
