Find Dns Server Windows Xp

I have a problem with IE randomly dying with the 'cannot find server' error. This problem is apparently rampant in the XP community. Experts Exchange has over 35,000 questions relating to it. I have found that by refreshing IE by repeatedly hitting cmd5 very fast (twice a second) that it will fix itself after about 10 hits. It will be OK for several more screens before dying again. Has anyone else tried this? And if it works, why? I am not a techie so I can't even begin to explain it. I have an HP Pavilion using SBC/Yahoo DSL.
