Starting in 1958, the serial numbers changed, The first number was the year, next was a letter for the model and then serial number. A gun made in 1958 would have a number such as 8A12345. The Browning site says the serial number records were not available or not accurate before 1958 for the Double Auto. The Standard Double Auto had a Steel receiver. I have recently picked up two Twelvettes and a Twentyweight. I am having trying to get the gun's dates of manufacture off of the Browning USA site. One Twelvette has a serial number of 3A45399 and I assume was made in 1963. The other Twelvette and the Twentyweight only have an 'A' at the start of their serial numbers with no number or numbers before the 'A' (A11532 and A22101 respectively). Were these guns made sometime between 1955 to 1957 or am I missing something here?
The Twelvettes are great shooting and pointing guns. I haven't figured out yet what to use the Twentyweight for.
Any help is appreciated.

I dont know DA's but assuming they are numbered like Auto-5's......
You have a model number but no year code and the year codes were introduced in 1958, so these guns would be numbered sequentially from the start of production in 1955.
So you would need to know how many guns were made each year to determine what year they were made in, but they were made before '58.

I have also wondered this over the years. The Browning web site states that guns made from 1958-1967 should have a number in front of the 'A' for aluminum receivers and 'C' for steel receivers. My family has a Double Auto that my Grandfather bought new in 1961. It has a serial # of A1XXXX.
I met a nice gnetleman at the Ohio Gun Collectors Assc. meeting in May. He has a large DA collection and had it on display at the show. It was something to see if you like Double Autos. He gave me the name of Browning's historian, Glen Jenson. He had a three digit serial numbered DA. He called Browning customer service and asked for Mr. Jeson. This man, for a fee, sent him a letter with the date of production and other info they had on the gun. If it is vital for you to know give Mr. Jenson a call!

Sorry for the tardy response, BackTo16Gauge, been busy. To answer your DoubleAuto date of manufacture questions, serial no. A11532 was made in 1955; serial no. A22101 was made in 1958.

Hi. Old thread, but I just received a BDA from my father's estate and I'm trying to find out info on it. I'm not even really sure where the serial number is, but from the discussion, I'm guessing it is split, above and below the forestock latch. If so, mine is C12 884. Does that seem reasonable? Can anyone help me out with a year, and any other info that might be interesting? It has a plain barrel, 26', and steel receiver. The left rear of the barrel shows 0 Kg 976, along with various interesting stamps, including one asterisk, which I assume means full choke. How am I doing so far? What else should I look for? I have already requested a manual from Browning. Not sure how long that will take.

EDIT: Pretty sure it is a 1955 model. Looking at the symbols, it has a sidewards Greek letter mu which, according to the table I found on this site, indicates 1955. It also has the asterisk followed by what looks like either a capital K or E (hard to tell which). Not sure what that means.

It's hard to say for sure, but 1955 sounds about right for # C12884. My Double Auto # C115xx has a barrel proofed in 1955. Yes, one asterisk means full choke, and the C prefix on the serial number indicates a steel receiver.
Somewhere I've seen a link posted for a PDF file of a Double Auto manual. I'll look around and if I find it I'll post it here. The Double Autos were fine guns, sounds like your father appreciated a quality shotgun.

It was written my Randy Wakeman who is a member of this forum. Near the end of the article is a link to the Double Auto owner's manual.

Action[edit]

This firearm features a unique loading port on the left side of the receiver.[5] As the first round is loaded, the shell is lifted by a mechanism and chambered by the bolt; once the bolt is closed, the lifting mechanism returns to the resting position below the loading port, where the next round can then be loaded. Upon firing the chambered round, the shell in the loading port is automatically chambered. The total capacity is 2 with 1 chambered round and 1 in the loading port.

Markings[edit]

The Double Automatic Shotgun has engravings on left rear of the barrel. Chokes are designated as:
